A Special Location

Situated in the Drôme Valley, south of the Vercors, our location lies where three climatic zones meet: Alpine, Mediterranean, and Continental European.

To the north, the Vercors National Park, France’s largest nature reserve, rises over a mile above sea level. Its rugged mountains are carved by limestone gorges and scattered with meadows, moorlands, forests, peaks, and ridges. Few people live here—only walkers experience the stunning spring blooms, from brilliant gentians and wild tulips to delicate narcissi and orchids.

Our walks also explore the valley and southern areas, where the Mediterranean climate shapes the scenery. Over the week, you’ll see an impressive variety of flowers. The walking is gentle, with plenty of time to pause and photograph the landscapes.

The Wildlife

But it’s not just the wildflowers that impress—the wildlife here is exceptional. Alongside numerous butterflies, you may spot golden eagles, short-toed eagles, vultures, chamois, ibex, and marmots. Occasionally, a wallcreeper appears on the cliffs of the Vercors plateau.

The Drôme River is another hotspot for wildlife. In the early morning or evening, you might see beavers, kingfishers, dippers, plovers, nightjars, and more. Nesting Bee-eaters are usually found a short distance up the valley.

If you’d like to learn more about the flora and fauna—or about any of our other holidays—please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
